HealthPlus – Building healthier communities

HealthPlus of Michigan’s vision is summed up in just three words – A Healthier Community. While this vision is simply stated, HealthPlus knows that achieving it is not so simple. That’s why HealthPlus approaches community wellness from many different angles. Through member and employer programs, support of community events, involvement in health projects and more, HealthPlus works continuously to make its vision a reality.

Sharing the health - One way HealthPlus helps build healthier communities is through helping companies develop wellness programs for their employees. There is no “one size fits all” wellness program due to differences in size and resources but, with a little effort and creativity, virtually any organization can offer some healthy resources to its employees. HealthPlus works with its employer clients to help them keep their workforce as healthy as possible, which can increase productivity and morale and reduce absenteeism

Taking it to the streets - HealthPlus supports and participates in numerous community health-related events and programs, from small benefit walks to its long-standing support of the Crim Festival of Races every year. In fact, HealthPlus will be the title sponsor of the Crim races in Flint in 2008. HealthPlus also contributes to the “health” of the community by supporting beautification projects like “Cultivating our Community” and the Flint River Trail Cleanup, cultural programs such as events at the Flint Cultural Center, and educational opportunities through scholarship programs and more

Helping the Helpers - Many other groups, large and small, work hard to build healthier communities. Through its Rainmaker grant program, HealthPlus provides funding to groups that are trying to make a positive difference by providing needed health services in their communities. Since its inception in 1994, the Rainmaker program has provided more than a half-million dollars in grant money to health-focused groups and projects in HealthPlus’ service area

Working Toward Maximum Health - HealthPlus works with members with chronic illnesses, such as asthma or diabetes, to keep their condition(s) under control and be as healthy as possible. From custom brochures and newsletters for HealthPlus members with these conditions to seminars on healthy eating and lifestyles, HealthPlus helps its members achieve and maintain an active, healthy lifestyle that is right for them.

Helping those who need it most - With health care becoming more expensive, the uninsured are among the most vulnerable. HealthPlus works with communities to address the growing number of uninsured citizens in its service area. From extensive involvement in local “Cover the Uninsured Week” efforts and activities to handling administrative tasks for Genesee Health Plan, a plan for uninsured individuals in Genesee County, HealthPlus provides significant time and resources to this very important community issue.

A Team Effort  - With building healthier communities as its guiding vision, HealthPlus partners with agencies, employers, health professionals and community groups to continually and aggressively strive toward this ongoing goal.
